👥 Who Can Participate

All public and private, secondary and middle schools in New Jersey are invited to participate in the Science League.

👩‍🎓  Students

  • Must be enrolled in a participating school

  • Must register via an advisor

🎓 Advisors

  • Must be a faculty member or official representative

  • Responsible for team registration

  • Must administer tests in secure environment

🎖Competition Format

  • 📅 Monthly Testing

    • Tests are scheduled for the third Thursday of each month

    • Advisors download and proctor

  • ⏱️ Timing & Format

    • 50-minute test duration

    • Multiple-choice tests- number of questions varies by subject

  • 🏆 Scoring

    • Based on percentage

    • Individuals and teams are ranked

👮‍♂️Rules

  • an individual can compete alone on a team, but must be associated with a school that is a paying member of the NJSL.
  • an individual must have an advisor or teacher that will administer the test to them in a secure manner.
  • individuals can only compete on one team during the season.
  • individuals can only compete on a team that corresponds to a class they are CURRENTLY taking- not from a past year
  • individuals must take 3 of the 4 tests to qualify for a certificate of achievement or plaque
  • individuals will only compete against other individuals in their subject, not subject teams
  • Teams must have a minimum of 2 individuals to compete as a team
  • Schools can have more than 6 students on a team, however, only the top 6 scores will be considered each month.
  • A school can register for as many as 12 teams for the season
  • Students may only compete on ONE team during the season
  • Students may only compete on a team that corresponds with a class they are CURRENTLY taking- not a class from the past
  • Individuals on the team will be ranked individually
  • Teams will be ranked against other teams
  • Team scores are calculated by adding the top 2 scores each month
  • Final team scores are the sum of each months top 2 scores
  • Each exam is timed at 50 minutes completion time
  • Testing must be administered on the scheduled testing day. Unless there is an unavoidable reason that a school cannot test on that day, the director MUST be notified and the test must be given with a day or 2 before or after the scheduled date.
  • Results MUST be submitted by the deadline provided.
  • When testing, advisors should collect all phones, smart watches, Meta glasses, etc. prior to testing
  • Students are not allowed to use any of the following:

      • Phones, smartwatches, or wearable technology of any kind
      • Models with QWERTY (i.e., typewriter-like) keypads as part of hardware or software (e.g., TI-92 Plus, Voyage 200)
      • Models with pen-input/stylus capability (e.g., Palm, PDAs, Casio ClassPad)
      • Models with wireless, Bluetooth, or cellular capability
      • Models that require an electrical outlet, “talk”** or make noise, or have a paper tape
      • Models that can access the internet
      • Models that have cell phone capability or audio/video recording or playing capability
      • Models that have a camera, scanning capability, or any other smartphone-type features
      • Models with touch-screen capability that aren’t on the list of approved graphing calculators (e.g., Casio ClassPad)
      • Hardware peripherals such as a stylus, keyboard, or wireless adapter with an approved calculator
